New Zealand breeding season kicks off

The Standardbred Stallion Registry for 2022 arrived in mailboxes across the country last week and, as always, represents an exciting time for industry participants with breeding season, warm weather and an exciting conclusion. of the revamped harness racing calendar which is fast approaching.

To celebrate the new breeding season, the NZ Standardbred Breeders Association and its affiliated branches hold their annual breeding season launches at three venues across the country.

Canterbury Breeders have the first opportunity to welcome the new season in awe-inspiring fashion with host Addington Raceway on Sunday (August 7e) to what promises to be a great afternoon of shopping and informative talk.

“We are once again well represented by participating stud farms from across New Zealand,” said NZSBA Executive Director John Mooney.

“For the first time since 2020, we will be welcoming some of our Australian counterparts with Louise Toulman from Haras Des Trotteurs and John Coffey from Northern Rivers Equine making the journey across the ditch to compete at all three venues,” he said.

Stud stallion presentations are not a new concept, but having them incorporated into a race meeting where possible over the past couple of years has increased attendance considerably.

“We were able to attract over 100 breeders to Christchurch and we hope to get closer to that mark this year,” Mooney said.

“The North Island branch is hosting its Cambridge launch party this year (Thursday 11e August) and Cathie Shaw always do a great job of welcoming its members, so I’m sure they’ll have great turnout there as well.

With Southland having no scheduled race meetings, the Southern Breeders branch will hold their annual event at the Ascot Park Hotel on Tuesday week (9e August). The lack of racing action has no bearing on attracting an excellent crowd of hardy, passionate breeders who turn up in droves to hear the informative discussion of new and old stallions.

At each location, attendees will automatically be eligible for one of two Livestock Veterinary Packages valued at $500 each.

Anyone wishing to attend is encouraged to click on the respective flyers below and confirm attendance with their local industry body.
